I finally decided to
join the DEP Club in
the 1998 because I
wanted to improve my
public speaking
skills, especially to
get more comfortable
speaking off the
cuff in front of my
clients and
contractors, when I
had to give
presentations. It
took me three years
to do my first ten
speeches and earn my CTM. I went on and
also earned my CL. I
am currently an
ATM-B working on my
ACS.
I became an area
governor in 2005 and
have served as Area
Governor in both
Division C and D for
three straight
years. In the
Spring of 2008 on my
way to one of my
club visits I
twisted my ankle but
still managed to
make the visit and
the club was
generous enough to
send me back to work
in a taxi cab.
I have enjoyed being
an area governor as
it forces me to get
outside my “comfort
zone” and speak in
front of people I do
not know. I even
gave a speech at one
of the meetings, as
they had no prepared
speaker signed up. I
also assisted the
2007-2008 Marketing
Team with meeting
the District
Marketing Goals.
I recently went to
the Toastmasters
2008 Regional VII
Conference which
includes nine (9)
other districts. I
was asked to be a
credentials chair
and ballot counter
for the business
meeting, and a judge
for the Region VII
International Speech
Contest. Wow - it
was a treat to see
Katherine Morrison
from my own District
31 win the entire
contest!
I attended my first
Toastmasters
International
Convention in
Calgary, Alberta
Canada this past
August 2008! I
enjoyed reconnecting
with my new friends
and making even
more.
Toastmasters has
made me more
comfortable in
speaking with a
variety of different
people in both small
and large groups. I
have enjoyed my
years in
Toastmasters and
plan to stay active
for many more. |
